The MAYCHAM Hidden Gem – Makan (Eating) Series is kicking off with a much-loved Dai Pai Dong favourite.
The sights and sounds of local dishes being cooked on giant roaring woks at Dai Pai Dongs are synonymous with Hong Kong. Just like enjoying breakfasts and brunches at a cha chaan teng or dim sum teahouses, dining in a Dai Pai Dong is a quintessential Hong Kong experience, which rooted in delicious, very reasonably priced Cantonese fare packed with a dose of "wok hei"—a smokey flavour that can be only achieved by cooking fresh ingredients over extreme heat.
For those unacquainted with this iconic local culinary tradition, Dai Pai Dong, which literally means "restaurant with a big license plate"—the city's last remaining open-air street food vendors that were once ubiquitous in the early 20th century. Due to growing hygiene concerns, the Hong Kong government had begun to restrict the licensing of Dai Pai Dongs. And with the recent closure of crowd-favourite, Tung Po Kitchen, there are not many left today, with only around 20 establishments scattered around Hong Kong.
If you want to get an authentic taste of Hong Kong and show your support to local businesses, a number of these alfresco eateries are still up and running to offer top-notch Cantonese cuisine— IF you know where to look.
But fret not, MAYCHAM have managed to scout for one and is delighted to organise a Makan session for our members & friends. 紫京海鮮飯店 or Purple King Kitchen is one of the hidden Dai Pai Dong tucked away but conveniently located in one of the Hong Kong western district neighbourhood, Sai Ying Pun, with a laid-back atmosphere and great hygiene.

Free corkage is available so you can bring your own alcohol/beverage for consumption to pair with the delicious food you'll be devouring that night! Simple beverages are also available to order at the kitchen itself.
Seats are very limited so book early now to avoid any disappointment.
Registration is on a first-come-first-serve basis.
Safeguarding public health remains our top priority. We are monitoring the government's directives concerning COVID-19 restrictions in order to make sure that our events will comply with the latest Hong Kong government regulations.
And in compliance with the latest COVID-19 restrictions, please be advised that ALL guests are required to produce a negative Rapid Antigen Test (RAT) at the registration, taken on the day of the event itself before attending said event.

- All guests must have at least 3-doses of Covid-19 vaccination
- Guests are required to provide the vaccination QR code on arrival and with the BLUE colour code.
