Save the date on Friday 15th January, for a special talk with HKMA's Senior Advisor Rami Hayek. With opening remarks by Dato Seri Cheah Cheng Hye, the talk will be moderated by veteran private banker Michael Yong-Haron. In the style of hard talk, the discussion will cover a range of topical issues from the HK Dollar peg to Hong Kong's fiscal and monetary policies, the digitalisation and internationalisation of RMB, the ramification of the National Security Law, the competitive landscape with Singapore and associated brain-drain concerns, as well as how Hong Kong is building a sustainable future around green finance, fintech and leveraging the opportunities of the Greater Bay Area and Wealth Connect.

    Dato’ Seri CHEAH Cheng Hye is Co-Chairman and Co-Chief Investment Officer of Value Partners Group. He has more than 30 years of investment experience, and is considered one of the leading practitioners of value-investing in Asia and beyond. Value Partners and he personally have received a total of more than 220 professional awards and prizes since the firm’s inception.

    Dato’ Seri CHEAH has been in charge of Value Partners since he co-founded the firm in February 1993. He led Value Partners to a successful listing on the Main Board of the Hong Kong Stock Exchange in 2007. The firm became the first asset management company listed in Hong Kong.

    Dato’ Seri CHEAH currently serves as an Independent Non-executive Director, Chairman of Investment Committee and Cash Market Consultative Panel of Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited, a member of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology Business School Advisory Council, Convenor of Advisory Council for the Malaysian Chamber of Commerce (Hong Kong and Macau), a member of the Hong Kong Trade Development Council Belt and Road & Greater Bay Area Committee, a Fellow of the Hong Kong Management Association, and a member of the Hong Kong Academy of Finance.

    Prior to starting Value Partners, Dato’ Seri CHEAH worked at Morgan Grenfell Group in Hong Kong, where, in 1989, he founded the Company’s HK/China equities research department as the Head of Research. Prior to this, he was a financial journalist with the Asian Wall Street Journal and Far Eastern Economic Review.

    Mr Hayek joined the Hong Kong Monetary Authority in June 2020 as Senior Advisor in the External Department. In this role, Mr Hayek helps drive the HKMA’s initiatives and efforts to enhance Hong Kong's competitiveness as an international financial center.

    Prior to joining the HKMA, Mr Hayek spent 6 years at HSBC as Managing Director, Head of Institutional Client Group in Asia Pacific. He was a member of the Global Banking & Markets Asia Pacific Management Committees. Mr Hayek joined HSBC from UBS where he was Head of Client Coverage Asia Pacific and was a member of the UBS Asia Pacific Management Committee. He joined UBS from Credit Suisse Asset Management where he was the Head of Distribution for Asia Pacific based in Hong Kong.

    Mr Hayek brings more than thirty years of combined experience in capital markets, asset & wealth management. He has a track record in emerging & developed markets, client & product management as well as in business development.

    Before moving to Hong Kong in 2007, Mr Hayek worked in London for Deutsche Bank, Barclays Bank and Bankers Trust.

    Mr Hayek has a Bachelor of Business Administration Degree (finance and economics) from the American University of Beirut and is fluent in English, French and Arabic.

    Michael has been a private banking veteran since 1997. He has held leadership positions at Standard Chartered Bank, Royal Bank of Canada, Credit Suisse and Credit Agricole Indosuez. At Standard Chartered Bank, he was Executive Officer and Managing Director for high-net worth client coverage in Greater China. He joined SCB from Royal Bank of Canada where he was Regional Head of North Asia for Wealth Management. He joined RBC from Credit Suisse where he was Managing Director and Sector Head of client coverage teams for Greater China. He joined CS from Credit Agricole Indosuez where he was part of the core team that successfully salvaged the Hong Kong private banking business from the Asian Financial Crisis.

    Michael holds a M.B.A. from the Kellogg School of Management and Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, where he also serves as an Ambassador. He is a Chartered Financial Analyst holder, and has served the CFA Institute as an exam grader for almost a decade. He holds the Financial Times Non-Executive Director Diploma. He received a joint degree (First Class Honours) in Economics and Law from the University of Wales. A strong believer in giving back to society, he is the co-founder of the Asia Society-Kellogg HKUST Leadership series; a Founding Patron of the M+ Museum; a Founding Sponsor of the Malaysian Chamber of Commerce (Hong Kong and Macau); a President Circle member of Asia Society Hong Kong; and he served two terms on the Executive Board of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong.
