The franchise industry in Hong Kong continues to develop. It is estimated that there are close to hundred franchise brands operating in Hong Kong, of which less than half are foreign owned. There is also a growing trend for master franchisors and real estate developers in Asia to establish franchise operations in Hong Kong covering Macao and some parts of Mainland China. These non-resident Hong Kong franchisees want to expand their territory beyond their home country to take advantage of economies of scale and to explore opportunities in Mainland China.


With a high-income population and a significant tourism industry (over 65.1 million inbound visitors in 2018), Hong Kong is a substantial and high-value market for various kinds of products. Hong Kong is also a stylish "shop window" for attracting the attention of more than 40 million Mainland China tourists annually. From January – April 2023, there were 7.2 mil tourists and 5.7 mil were Chinese tourists.

    Dato’ Lawrence Liu Meng Fah is from Batu Pahat, Johor. He has been living in Hong Kong since 1985, where he arrived looking to jumpstart his career as a newly minted accountant from UK. He has held key positions in several large companies, initially starting out as a CFO from which, he transitioned into a General Manager before ultimately becoming an entrepreneur and starting his own business.

    He is the Director of Galaila International Co. Ltd., a company which supply leather and frozen beef from South America to China. He is also the Operator of Sunway Pyramid’s Digital Centre, a collection of retail outlets specialising in mobile devices and computing products. Dato’ Lawrence is also the Representative of Invest Selangor in Hong Kong and last but not least, the current Deputy Chairman of the Malaysian Business Chamber in Hong Kong and Macao (MAYCHAM).

    Dato’ Lawrence is a Fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA). In addition, he holds a Joint Executive MBA from Kellogg - Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) as well as a Master of Science degree in eCommerce Management also from HKUST.

    He is married with two sons.

    Yazrin is the Trade Commissioner or Trade Consul, under the Trade Section of the Consulate General of Malaysia in Hong Kong (MATRADE), with its main role is to promote Malaysian products and services in Hong Kong and Macao. MATRADE is Malaysia’s National Export Promotion Agency under the Ministry of International Trade and Industry of Malaysia (MITI).

    He was previously stationed in MATRADE’s Office in Ho Chi Minh City covering the IndoChina sub-region comprise Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos. He has also held various portfolio in export promotions covering the ASEAN & Oceania and the European Union (EU) markets, as well as in the Transport & Logistics Industry. He was also the Special Officer to the CEO of MATRADE from 2015 to 2016.
